A Plastic Surgeon Speaks Honestly About Body Dysmorphic Disorder

Dr. Anthony Youn gave a great and enlightening interview on NPR yesterday about plastic surgery, body dysmorphic disorder, and the fallout from living in a world with narrowly defined (and stereotypically Caucasian) beauty ideals. Youn, a prominent plastic surgeon who appears on Rachael Ray's show, himself had a painful jaw reduction surgery at age 17, so he's keenly aware of the pressure to conform that our society places on young people of color.

It's a fascinating listen, especially if you've ever wondered about the intersection of body image and race. Listening to Youn, you realize that the most unhealthy social norms are oftentimes literally written across our faces, and how imperative it is for us to create a more inclusive model of beauty.

Want a Nose Job? You Might Have Body Dysmorphic Disorder

A new study in the August 2011 issue of journal Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery found that 33 percent of patients seeking rhinoplasty showed moderate to severe symptoms of body dysmorphic disorder. BDD is a common psychological illness in which patients don't see their bodies or aspects of their appearance as they really are, and it plays a significant factor in many eating disorders and body image issues generally. Despite Risks, Silicone Breast Implants Still Considered Safe

Almost 20 years ago, silicone-gel breast implants were taken off the market due to claims they caused autoimmune disorders. But in 2006, after these claims couldn't be backed up to solid evidence, silicone implants became available again.

And now that five years have passed, the FDA is saying that while silicone implants are still safe, they come with risks. Some of the most common are hardening around the implant, reoperation implant rupture, asymmetry, wrinkling, scarring, infection, and pain.

Because of this, the FDA notes that women need to understand silicone implants are not meant to be forever, as the chance of problems increases the longer the implants stay. In fact, one in five women who get silicone implants for breast augmentation purposes has to have them removed within 10 years. And for those who receive them for breast reconstruction, one in two needs them removed within 10 years.

"Despite frequent local complications and adverse outcomes, the benefits and risks of breast implants are sufficiently well understood for women to make well informed decisions about their use," the FDA said. Do you think that silicone implants should still be on the market?

One Bulgarian man is taking his Lady Gaga love to the extreme by using cosmetic surgery to turn himself into her doppelgänger. Penio Daskalov is having both a sex change operation and cosmetic surgery to aid in his Gaga-fication. "I really admire the way she has created herself, so when I've had my operations I won't be quite a man or quite a woman," Penio says.

The phenomenon of ordinary people using plastic surgery to look like celebrities isn't new territory, but this is perhaps the most extreme example so far. Do you think this story will have a happy ending?

Credit Crunch Affects Plastic Surgery

As the credit crunch rages both sides of the Atlantic, it seems that plastic surgeons are no longer immune. Those purveyors of the New New Face are feeling the pinch as women start cutting back on their beauty spending. Just as we're trying to use products that have multiple benefits or are considerably cheaper, so those who splash out cosmetic procedures are having to rein in their treatments.

According to the New York Times, plastic surgeons have reported a significant drop in a range of cosmetic procedures over the last few months. Around 60 percent of plastic surgeons said they performed fewer cosmetic procedures in the first six months of this year compared with the same period last year. This was according to an e-mail survey conducted earlier this month by the American Society of Plastic Surgeons.

The decline seems to reflect a downward trend in cosmetic medicine that is due to the recession, both in the UK and US. Dr. Richard A. D’Amico, the president of the plastic surgery society, told the New York Times that he believes this is likely to worsen. It is hard to accurately tell how badly the credit crunch will effect the cosmetic surgery boom as many doctors are currently performing cosmetic operations that patients had scheduled over the summer. However, Dr. D’Amico said he expected a further drop-off in procedures this winter because fewer patients are booking procedures now. He added that “We won’t see the bottom until the first quarter of 2009. It’s not a pretty picture.”

There's also been a decline in procedures like botox and fillers. This trend seems to fall in line with a general feeling of being more careful about our spending. Would the bad economy put you off spending money on cosmetic procedures?

The Observer Woman suggests that all the teenage celebrities that are suddenly red carpet material, may go someway to explain this new aesthetic. Certainly if you think of Peaches Geldof, Miley Cyrus, Alexa Chung and even model Lily Cole, it's true that while they may have super-slender, size 8 figures; their faces do still have that rosy, plumped-up look that suggests a hint of teenage baby fat.

This baby-faced look is now being craved by women in their forties, fifties and sixties, for whom having fillers has become almost as normal as applying face cream. Volume, it seems, is not just for tulip skirts and funnel sleeves; now we all want volumised faces too.

The real problem with all this 'work' being done is that as a society we get so attuned to seeing enhanced and airbrushed faces, that when we look at the normally ageing skin of ourselves, our friends and family, it can seem out-of-proportionally old. As with photo-shopping your holiday pics, surely after a while the temptation is to try and look more and more perfect, more and more smooth and plumped up, until you don't look like yourself anymore. Even Dr Brandt admits "People just don't see themselves". Maybe it's time we all stepped away from the mirror.
