Dita Von Teese may be the queen of vintage glamour, but she had some serious competition at last night's Van Cleef & Arpels Cocktail Party in New York, when Blake Lively also tried out a look that harked back to the past. Both stars started out with '40s-style hair and red lipstick and took advantage of the many Van Cleef & Arpels diamonds on offer, but that's where the similarities ended. While Dita chose a shimmering cream, silver, and blue brocade gown by Carolina Herrera with a plunging neckline and 3/4-length sleeves, Blake opted for a black lace slip dress. Her Marchesa creation featured pale pastel floral thread-work embroidery and Chantilly lace cutouts, stopping at the calf to show off her strappy sandals. Both women gave us a master class in how to put a vintage spin on modern designs, but whose look do you love the most?
Johnny Depp brought along girlfriend Amber Heard when he reunited with his Cry-Baby crew at the ninth annual Johnny Ramone Tribute at the Hollywood Forever Cemetery yesterday. The actor took part in a Q&A alongside costars Ricki Lake and Traci Lords and director John Waters. Other celebrity attendees included Dita Von Teese and Linda Ramone, Johnny's widow. The film, which marked Johnny's first-ever leading movie role, was screened against a mausoleum wall alongside vintage Ramones footage.
Johnny's costar Traci gave insight into the actor's drive to become a movie star ahead of the screening, saying, "Johnny Depp desperately wanted to be a movie star, and everybody said he couldn't, because he was only a supporting actor on 21 Jump Street. This was his first lead in a movie, a big deal for him." John agreed with Traci, saying that "everyone in Cry-Baby was in acting image rehab. If you embrace what your critics are saying and make fun of it, you turn it around." Luckily, Johnny's "rehab" in Cry-Baby paid off for him as he went on to become one of the biggest movie stars in the world.
Celebrities crisscross the globe to walk red carpets around the world time and time again. And while most of us don't have to worry about paparazzi snapping our mugs postflight, when it comes to looking impossibly fresh and perfectly coiffed, this jet-setting bunch knows a thing or two about getting it right. Garner in-flight hair inspiration from these world-traveling women, and no one will ever know that you slept for hours . . . at 30,000 feet.
1. Loose waves: Second-day hair is ideal for airplane travel. Just take Dita Von Teese's stretched curls as an example. Let your day-old waves or curls fall flat when you fly, refreshing roots with a touch of dry shampoo. Amp up the look with a swipe of bright lipstick and paparazzi-blocking shades.
2. Side plait: Miranda Kerr knows that anything styled to the side is an airport winner. A ponytail or plait flipped over one shoulder will allow you to sleep with ease. Plus, you can take the plait down once you reach your destination for an effortless, wavy look. Another nap-friendly style is a milkmaid plait. Go ahead: put those earplugs in, and get some beauty rest.
3. Hat: A celebrity airport staple is a floppy or fedora hat. Jessica Alba threw on a felt fedora after her long trip to distract from tousled hair. She also had a chance to apply mascara, blush, and a rosy lip colour. If you plan on stuffing your hat in your carry-on, then fill it with your underwear to make sure it maintains the shape while in the cargo hold.
4. Topknot: Steal this look from Carly Rae Jepsen on your nighttime plane ride. A topknot will keep hair from getting mussed by the headrest or your neck pillow. By adding a scarf around the base, you can hide flyaways and add an element of style.
Kate Moss turned up the glamour to attend an amfAR gala in São Paulo, Brazil, on Friday. She wore a black dress with a dramatic plunging neckline while she mingled with fellow attendees, including pregnant Fergie in a smart suit and Sharon Stone, who walked the red carpet with model boyfriend Martin Mica. Kate has been enjoying the sights in São Paulo and dropped by the city's ninth annual International Art Fair on Thursday. Kate, an avid art fan and friend of the late artist Lucian Freud, checked out the pieces on display ahead of the charity gala.
So far this week at the Spring/Summer 2013 Haute Couture shows at Paris Fashion Week, one classy trend that seems to be making a comeback is the birdcage veil paired with red lipstick. Reminiscent of a fascinator, this headwear is time-honoured, sexy and demure all in one. See perilous beauties like Dita Von Teese and Laetitia Casta sit on the sidelines in these stylish wares, in addition to being present on the runway at Christian Dior. Shop birdcage veils below and let me know if this is something you'd try out for Spring.
The bottle, which has lots of vintage touches like a black silk tassel, vintage-style ball atomizer, and "nail polish red” pearl inset, was also a big part of the fragrance design for Dita. "I have always been a passionate collector of rare perfume bottles from the 1920s and 1930s," Dita said in a recent press statement. “My perfume’s flacons need to be the absolute embodiment of my dream of glamour, mystery, beauty, and the femme fatale."
Gourmand-type scents aren't exactly my favorite either; give me anything that smells like cake or cookies, and I'll instantly feel ill. What about you? What types of fragrances and notes do you tend to avoid?
Katie Holmes and Gisele Bundchen shared a red carpet last night to celebrate the Beauty Culture exhibit, which opens tomorrow, at the Annenberg Space For Photography in LA. It's a collection of images from various photographers, including a snap of Gisele herself, designed to make viewers question the pursuit of beauty. More Hollywood stars came out for the event, including Halle Berry, Ali Larter, and Amber Heard. Supermodel Gisele wrote that she was home in LA after a quick trip to the Amazon, where she was able to do the environmental work that's close to her heart. She posted on her blog, "What a magical place the Amazon is, and so full of history and legends . . . I’m here, sharing my special experience and feelings so we can all think about it. We need and we want to develop, but not at the cost of damaging the planet." The visit was one of philanthropy and fashion, as there was a Gisele Bundchen bikini sighting in Sao Paolo when she took the runway for the Hope Valentine's Day special collection show last week. Katie, meanwhile, is back on the West Coast after a stop in Chicago to honor Oprah and a stint in Florida. She got some swimsuit time in as well when she hit the pool with daughter Suri at her Miami hotel, near where husband Tom Cruise has been working on Rock of Ages.
The rumors seem to be true: the glamorous Dita Von Teese is developing her own fragrance. While working in the French countryside with her perfumers, she tweeted about the process. Don't expect a fruity floral from the burlesque star, who counts Quelques Fleurs and Dior's Passage No. 4 as favorites. "No fruit, no vanilla, no candy," she insists. "Velvet sensuality with a dash of vulgarity! I want to evoke passion with fragrance: intense love/lust and distaste/fear rather than merely popular acceptance." No word on an official launch date, but if we had to guess, we'd predict late Fall or early 2012.
Matthew McConaughey played a supporting role to Camila Alves when she walked the runway at the Heart Truth's Red Dress Collection in Manhattan last night. The sexy actor sported some stubble as he and sexy Camila took a break from their West Coast kid duties for the big evening out. The annual event helps kick off NYC's Fall Fashion Week with an impressive list of past participants like Heidi Klum and Kim Kardashian. The lucky ladies sashaying down the runway for this year's philanthropic show included a variety of names from TV, film, music, media, and athletics. Audrina Patridge, Dita Von Teese, and Julianne Hough happily modelled their fiery gowns and busy mom-of-two Denise Richards put aside the drama affecting her personal life for a cause close to her heart.
