The 2013 Global Citizen Festival in NYC's Central Park brought big-name celebrities and musicians to the Big Apple on Saturday. In its second year, the event drew 60,000 fans to the park for a concert with a cause — to end extreme poverty around the world. Artists like Alicia Keys, John Mayer, U2, Stevie Wonder, and Kings of Leon took the stage to perform, while celebrities like Katie Holmes, Gerard Butler, and Olivia Wilde and fiancé Jason Sudeikis were on hand to talk about the cause and warm up the crowd. During the show, Alicia dedicated her song “Try Sleeping With a Broken Heart” to “all the children of the world who might have to sleep with a broken heart," later saying, "I'm here to make a statement." Beyoncé Knowles and Jay-Z were in Houston last night to attend the NBA All-Star Game. They were treated to opening performances from John Legend and Ne-Yo, as well as a later set by their pal Alicia Keys, before going on to watch the West beat the East with the help of LA Lakers player Kobe Bryant. The loss was a disappointment to the Miami Heat's LeBron James, who kicked off the fun weekend at Saturday's Two Kings dinner with Jay-Z and Beyoncé. The annual Two Kings event, which typically takes place over the All-Star Game weekend, was extraspecial for Jay-Z this year. It's the first-ever season for the Brooklyn Nets, of which he is a part owner. There was more fun in store for the couple too — Saturday brought the debut of Beyoncé's documentary, Life Is But a Dream.
Taylor Swift and Alicia Keys brought US star power to the red carpet at the NRJ Music Awards this evening in Cannes. Both arrived in France recently to attend the awards, which also attracted musical acts like Psy and One Direction. Tonight may be an awkward one for Taylor Swift since she may run into her ex Harry Styles of One Direction. He and his bandmates Zayn Malik, Niall Horan, Liam Payne, and Louis Tomlinson hit the carpet as well. Both Taylor and Alicia had stunning — though different — looks before the show began. Alicia wore a cutout Michael Kors gown, with husband Swizz Beatz on her arm, and apparently got a great reception. She tweeted, "France, I can feel the love!" Taylor, meanwhile, donned a sequined gold mini from Elie Saab.
President Barack Obama and First Lady Michelle Obama shared a special first dance to Jennifer Hudson singing "Let's Stay Together" at The Inaugural Ball held at the Walter E. Washington Convention Center in Washington DC last night. Michelle wore a glamorous red Jason Wu gown for the occasion, which came after the official swearing-in ceremony and parade earlier today. Beyoncé Knowles performed the national anthem at that event, but this evening Alicia Keys, Brad Paisley, and Stevie Wonder took the stage to sing. It's been a busy few days in our nation's capitol with plenty of celebrities attending inaugural festivities over the weekend and even more famous faces stepping out tonight. Celebrities and rock stars joined up to help out with the 12/12/12 concert benefiting Hurricane Sandy victims in NYC last night. Katie Holmes, Kristen Stewart, and Blake Lively appeared at the event, which raised money for the Robin Hood Relief Fund. Blake donned a bright orange Isabel Marant dress, while Katie picked blue Tom Ford and Kristen wore a neon yellow Jonathan Simkhai getup.
Katie joined Jason Sudeikis to present a video called "Red Hook Rising," bringing attention to those affected in Brooklyn. Kristen, meanwhile, praised New Jerseyans and introduced Jon Bon Jovi. Blake spoke about Connecticut and brought out Chris Martin, who performed with Michael Stipe. Bruce Springsteen, Alicia Keys, Kanye West, and many more musicians performed at the 12/12/12 concert. Paul McCartney gave a sensational performance when he joined up with the surviving members of Nirvana, Dave Grohl and Krist Novoselic, to perform a new song called "Cut Me Some Slack."
The concert was broadcast both on TV and for free in movie theaters in the tri-state area, so Sandy victims had a place to enjoy the music. Superstorm Sandy left many in New York and New Jersey homeless and without power after it drove through the area in late October.
Katy Perry donned a glamorous green Yves Saint Laurent gown to step out at the Celebration of Carole King and Her Music event at Dolby Theatre last night in Hollywood. Katy linked up with honoree, Carole, to hit the red carpet for the charitable evening benefiting Paul Newman's The Painted Turtle camp, which provides children suffering from serious illnesses with a Summer camp experience. Also in attendance were Alicia Keys, Jack Nicholson, and Daryl Hannah. Katy and Alicia honored Carole's legacy by performing covers of her greatest hits and teaming up for a duet on stage at the tribute concert. It was a change of pace for Katy, who has herself been an honoree recently. On Sunday, Katy was honored at the Trevor Live annual benefit in LA and she was also awarded Billboard's woman of the year statue last week in NYC.
The 2012 MTV EMAs took place in Frankfurt last night with German native Heidi Klum as host. Before the fun kicked off, she hit the red carpet in a tight, laced-up Versace gown, one of six ensembles she wore throughout the evening. Heidi said hi to attendees like Alicia Keys, Lana Del Rey, Gwen Stefani, and Taylor Swift, wearing a J. Mendel white dress, as they headed inside the city's Festhalle.
Best song honors went to "Call Me Maybe" singer Carly Rae Jepsen, and Taylor Swift won three EMAs, including best female act. Psy took home best video for "Gangnam Style" — see the full list of 2012 MTV EMA winners. Justin Bieber, who's on tour in the US, accepted best male act with a video. Performers at the show included No Doubt, Taylor Swift, and Alicia Keys. Kanye West still had a great night despite not taking home a statue. He and girlfriend Kim Kardashian indulged in PDA, and were snapped lounging on a white banquette kissing and hugging. Heidi also had a memorable time, tweeting postshow, "I thank my lucky stars for all the great opportunities I get to experience. Hope you guys had fun. . . off to the after-party!" At the bash, she made the rounds with other attendees like models Anne V and Isabeli Fontana.
The red carpet at this evening's MTV VMAs was full of stylish musical stars. White was a theme for a few of the ladies, with Taylor Swift donning a J. Mendel pantsuit and Rihanna picking a simple gown to keep the focus on her new haircut. Katy Perry went colorful, as usual, in an Elie Saab creation. Emma Watson also picked up on the bright tones, wearing a mixed print combo from Peter Pilotto. Miley Cyrus had a new take on a black dress in Emilio Pucci, while Zoe Saldana looked gorgeous in a light mini from Salvatore Ferragamo. There were plenty more girls posing before the main event took place — click through to see Alicia Keys, Rita Ora, Gabby Douglas, and more! This week in Manchester, Mel B went patriotic with her outfit in a Stella McCartney monochrome dress for the X Factor auditions. Guest judge Melanie Brown accessorised with Versace shoes, Mouawad jewels and an Audemars Piguet watch. Two months earlier, Alicia Keys wore the same black and white number to the the Stella McCartney Ready-To-Wear Fall/Winter 2012 show at Paris Fashion Week, keeping with the theme in heels by the British designer. I'd love to know what you think, so vote below to let me know who wore it best!
